Doctor by the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela with the thesis La Hormona de Crecimiento (GH) como factor de supervivencia celular 1998. Supervised by Dr. Jesús Devesa Múgica, Dr. Víctor M. Arce Vázquez.

José A. Costoya began his professional activity in the National Health System at the same time that he carried out his research activity at the University of Santiago de Compostela. During his doctoral studies, he stayed at U344 of the INSERM, Faculty of Medicine (University of Paris V). A year later he obtained his European doctorate. In 1999 he began his postdoctoral fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York (USA) as a researcher within the Cancer Genetics Program. In 2004, he joined the USC as a Ramón y Cajal researcher. He is the author of several book chapters and scientific articles, as well as communications at national and international scientific conferences. He is also a member of several national and international scientific societies and academies and has been awarded several research awards. He is currently Professor in the Department of Physiology of the University of Santiago de Compostela and principal investigator of the Molecular Oncology Laboratory (MOL) at CIMUS and IDIS.
