Doctor by the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela with the thesis Hidroxipropilcelulosas (L-HPCs y HPCs) como excipientes base en liberación controlada. Importancia de sus propiedades estructurales y reologicas. 1998. Supervised by Dr. Ángel Concheiro Nine.
Carmen Alvarez-Lorenzo (Degree and PhD in Pharmacy, with Extraordinary Awards) is Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA) (1998-2001) and a "Ramón y Cajal" researcher at USC (2001-2006). Her work sits at the interface between pharmaceutical technology, biology, materials science, and medicine. In particular, her research focusses on drug and gene nanocarriers, stimulus-sensitive hydrogels with molecular recognition capabilities, bioinspired drug delivery systems, scaffolds for regenerative medicine, and drug-medical device combination products. She has been the PI of numerous regional, national and international projects. She is co-author of more than 380 articles, 30 book chapters, 20 patents, and more than 400 conference contributions and invited lectures, and co-editor of two books. h-index: 82 (Google Scholar; May 2023). She is ranked 7th in the h-index in Pharmacology and Pharmacy in Spain (https://grupodih.info/salud.html), and among the 100 Best Resident Scientists in Spain. She has been president of the Drafting Committee and Coordinator of the Interuniversity Master (USC-UVigo) in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2018-2022). Supervisor of 30 Doctoral Theses and another 10 in progress. She is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Controlled Release and Carbohydrate Polymers, and an Editor of the International Journal of Pharmaceutics, and member of the AEMPS Experts network. She is a Numerary Academician of the Royal Galician Academy of Pharmacy and of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Angeles Alvariño Medal 2021. She is currently Coordinator of the Competitive Reference Group I + DFarma (Xunta de Galicia) (http://idfarmausc.es/) and Director of the USC Materials Institute (iMATUS).
