Resumen

To investigate possible biological effects of exposure to electromagnetic (EM) fields -at frequencies of Global System for Mobile communication (GSM)- on the Central Nervous System (SNC), an exposure setup for in vivo experiments is presented. The setup consists of a metallic cage housing a methacrylate device for immobilisation of the animal and two antennas for transmission and reception, respectively. The main advantage of this setup is that the power absorbed by the animal can be directly measured through the external associated microwave circuitry. Such a subsystem is also used to control any possible spurious signal inside the enclosure and the power applied to the animal. The 1g averaged peak SAR and mean SAR values in the brain, and whole-body, of a rat are estimated from experimental power values and with the aid of a commercial FDTD application, by using a numerical rat phantom. The influence of the positioning of the rat is also considered in this study. With this setup, it was possible to observe the effects of GSM in the behaviour and neuronal activity on the brain animals, which showed certain acute influence on the cerebral activity
