Abstract

The Anacreontics were attributed to the archaic Greek lyric poet Anacreon of Teos since the edition of the text by Henri Estienne (1554). Francisco de Quevedo used this edition in his work Anacreón castellano (1609), which is a free translation from the original text. He thought that he was imitating the authentic poems by the Greek poet, but, afterwards, it was proved that these were later apocrypha. Although Quevedo was not conscious of these problems of attribution, his Spanish version, unexpectedly, included an authentic fragment of Anacreon. This study aims to emphasize Quevedo’s intuition, since he selected a genuine text from among all the fragments included in Estienne appendix. We also underline the relevant position of this fragment and its function, as a significant closing of the work
