Abstract

In general, it is said that euphemism replaces taboo as amitigation strategy, but we can also see that the euphemisticword does not necessarily banish the taboo word from thediscourse. Indeed, according to a corpus, many times thetaboo and the euphemistic terms stay close to each other in agiven context, and are interchangeable like synonyms. Thisco-occurrence on the syntagmatic axis seems to be a stylisticvariation and undermines the idea that every manner of namingis normally associated with a different usage context
