Resumo
This chapter presents the «Mutual Translation Correspondence Analysis» (mtca) methodology as a means of discovering the degree of correspondence between two lexical items, based on translations of the same original text. The procedure consists of checking the translation correspondences from each of the languages in both directions, analysing the (in)equivalences manifested. The correspondences between the Spanish verb sentir(se)and the German verb (sich) fühlen in the translations into these two languages from the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling, after aligning the sequenc-es, are analysed. The multimodal and polysemous nature of sentir(se)/(sich) fühlen means that the cross-linguistic equivalence is not high, given that the occurrences of sentir(se)are, moreover, much more numerous. The analysis, therefore, offers an interesting range of German lexical items and syntactic constructions corresponding to those of Spanish sentir(se), i.e. an approximation to the cross-linguistic lexical-semantic and constructional network associated with both verbs. This proposal is revealed as a productive methodolo-gy to complement a contrastive analysis of the combinatorial profiles of verbal predicates.
