Abstract

In this paper we analyse the justifications elaborated by small groups of students from 10 th and 11 th grade during theconstruction of the WHO protocol for food emergencies and those provided during the comparison of the constructedprotocols with the reference one, as well as with one example made by students of the same age. The proposed task isdesigned to promote student engagement in the scientific practice of argumentation and to address food safety as a so-cio-scientific in Biology lessons. The results show differences in the level of justification assigned to the groups’ responses,so implications for the design of tasks of this kind are discussed.
