Abstract

n recent decades, the study of the role of emotional variables in language processing has gained the attention of experts in psychology in general, and psycholinguists in particular, interested in exploring the relationship between affective and cognitive processes. This interest is evident in the proliferation of word databases developed in Spanish and other languages that collect normative subjective values for an increasingly wide range of emotional dimensions or categories, providing researchers with the necessary instruments to carry out empirical studies that require of a careful selection of stimuli. This chapter presents databases and measurement instruments such as the Affective Norms for English Words and its advantages and disadvantages. A deep review of the research in sentiment analysis and concepts such as emotional valence or emotional activation is presented. Similarly, the emoFinder is introduced. Subsequently, all these concepts and instruments are linked with research focused on Spanish. This chapter also details the neurophysiological evidence and how implications for language teaching can be drawn from them.
