Resumo
The research approaches the factors and agents that explain school segregation by national origin from the perspective of the population that suffer it to a greater extent, migrant families who have to educate their children in a foreign educational system. Using a mixed methodology, which combines statistical, geographical and qualitative approaches, we firstly calculate the magnitude of the phenomenon in the city of Granada as a case study, secondly, we represent it in the territory through geo-referenced data, and thirdly, we analyse the discourse of headmasters of “high immigrant concentration schools” and migrant families, through their practices of school choice. The results describe a complex social fact, which is influenced by processes of residential, institutional and school choice segregation. Finally, we elaborate ideal-types of families and concentration processes that offer guidelines for understanding a phenomenon that reflects the inequalities that occur in our societies.
