Abstract

The attached thesis stl!dies the issues of translating Valle-lnclán's works into operatic language, through its literary manifestation of the libretto. The comparative study between the original Valle-lnclán texts and the librettos will consider changes made to the diegesis, the plot or characters, comparing the convergences and divergences with the original works. Criticisms received by the operas upan their respective premieres, both in the media and within academia, as well as the information available about the social context of the premiere, will also be provided. For each work, the main lines of interpretation proposed by academic research will be reviewed. To situate the studied librettos within a literary framework, the historical evolution of the libretto has been previously reviewed, a long with that of the operatic genre itself, a modern manifestation of the synthesis of word and music which can be seen throughout history. This research definitively establishes the corpus of librettos based on the work of Dr Ramón, its characteristics and localisation. The study confirms the change in meaning wich is always produced, to greater or lesser intensity, in the process of transposition into another language.
