Abstract
Fungi are of great importance among all forestproducts, although many of their potential utilities are widelyunknown. For this reason, the present work deals with thehuge diversity within fungi and the main resources they canprovide for human needs, especially as regards wildmushrooms. However, since overexploitation of fungi oftenreduces and endangers populations of many species, thispaper reviews the major threats, and discusses the mainguidelines to preserve fungal diversity and to obtain a sustainable use of fungal resources, focusing on a studycase successfully performed in the Iberian Peninsula.
