Abstract

Sound in Dziga Vertov's films became the basis for a systematic experimentation on cinematographic language. All along his filmography, from his 10's newsreels to his II World War documentary films, sound instigates the new advances in the development of film language. Vertov developed rhythmic-visual poems in film, sound metonymies, technical epistemologies mediated by sound, a public sound sociology, etc. In short, sound in Vertov's films has been shortly studied so far but it could be considered a consubstantial part of his image conception because sound has operated as a structural, theoretical and experimental source for his films. This paper studies sound importance in Vertov's films from three points of view: an epistemological, an ideological and a sensorial perspective.
