El mito de Ulises en Torrente Ballester y Buero vallejo

The myth of Ulysses was treated in Spanish Post-Civil War theatre. Torrente Ballester and Buera Vallejo took an interest in it for reasons that were not merely forms of culturalist recreation. Torrente -whose works were not performed during his life- published his adaptation of the Odyssey theme motivated by intellectual reasons. He also tried contributing to the birth of a troublesome theatre of a higher leve) than the existing one at that moment. On the other hand, after the success of Historia de una escalera in 1949, Buero Vallejo premiered En la ardiente oscuridad, a symbolic drama about blind people, and then dealed with Ulysses and Penelope's story. This article considers the treatment of the myth in previous studies and tries to explain the motives that guided both authors. Although Buero read Torrente's play, he was not influenced by it. In any case, Buero distances himself from Torrente's version of the myth. In addition, two forgotten reviews vy Torrente of Buero's play and an interview with Buero about his drama are presented in this article.
