Abstract

Introduction: Use of automated external defibrillator (AED) is vital to reverse a cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation. With this study we tried to find the expertise of a group of college students on the AED and are able to use it properly after watching a video where its operation is explained. Methodology: We had the collaboration of 54 students from the Faculty of Education and Sciences Sports of Pontevedra (University of Vigo) (31 of Childhood Education and 23 of Primary Education). Both groups had to perform a questionnaire with three questions on the AED and then watch a video in which its operation is explained. Participants then had to make practical use of the defibrillator test on a mannequin. The group of Primary Education was conducted a week after the video display; Childhood Education group a month later. During execution, different incidents/errors were recorded. Results: 33.3 % of the sample who participated in the study did not know what was at the time of AED cover the questionnaire; 92.6 % said they did not know use it, and 96.3 % had not received training. Participants were able to finish the test correctly, recorded an average time of 88.70 seconds. Conclusion: The analyzed sample has no training in the use of AED, including most of the participants do not even know what it was. Usability of AED is manifest, since over 90 % of the sample has managed to use it only after viewing a training video.
