Resumo

The aim of this article is to understand the relationship between the Latin American Revolutionary Left Wing in the sixties and seventies and the two topics this monograph is concerned with: democracy and authoritarianism. It will attempt to analyze the vision that the Left Wing had of democracy and the prevailing political systems as well as indirectly considering authoritarianism. Firstly we will try to understand the dichotomy involved between democracy and revolution, as throughout the left we find a common ideological base inherited from the Cuban Revolution and its resulting political-ideological set up, which is the fundamental basis when considering both the overall topic and also the individual aspects. Secondly, we will focus on the MLN-T in Uruguay, a paradigmatic example of the matters in question due to its revolutionary proposals - adapted to its national circumstances, its singularity within the continent given the country's tradition and democratic solidarity up to the end of the sixties and for its consequent evolution - it reorganized itself politically after the revolution, giving up its weapons and forming part of the electoral - democratic system. As a result, it gained its greatest success by becoming the dominating force in the Uruguayan left with the election of one of its old members, José Mújica, to the presidency in 2009.
