Abstract

Impact of the mining activity in the population of the mountain spaces. The slate and the coal in the mountains between Galicia and León.- The mining industry developed in the mountainous limit between the Galicia and Castilla y León autonomous regions has been essential to produce wealth and thus to keep a relatively abundant population into a space with a weak initial attraction. There the declining charcoal extraction coexists with the expansive slate industry, but in both cases the demographic result has been the same: a concentration of the population figures in the central nuclei of Ponferrada, O Barco de Valdeorras and Bembibre.
