Resumo

Both problem gambling and high risk gambling are studied in relation to illegal drug use (Cannabis, Cocaine, Heroine and psychostimulants) in a representative sample of high school students in Galicia, Spain (N= 2,790; 14-21). Problem gamblers accounted for 5.6% of the population and high risk gamblers 8.2%. Gambling and illegal drug use were positively correlated. For example, while 74.9% of the non problem gamblers reported they had never tried Cannabis, this figure is reduced to 57.2% for the high risk gamblers and to 43.9% for the problem gamblers. Males were more likely than females to both have tried and to use illegal drugs on a regular basis. Age is also positively correlated to illegal drug use when two separate age groups, (14-17; 18-21) are taken into consideration. These results allow us to clearly state that greater involvement in problem gambling is related to greater illegal drug use and intitiation.
