Abstract
Selecting a journal to subscribe to regarding only to its impact factor may not be as correct as it may be thought if we are looking for relevant clinical information. In order to determine its goodness as criterion for selection, a comparative study between the clinical information published in journals indexed in MEDLINE with and without impact factor, has been performed. Accuracy of MEDLINE search, quality of evidence published and frequency of studies, relevant both in clinical and scientific aspects of oral surgery, were analysed. It is concluded, that impact factor can be relevant for backing the selection of a journal, but its main advantage is it can identify journals that critically select their contents from those that do not and whose contents are made of clinical information of minor interest.
