Abstract

This draft paper analyses the growth of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) in peripheral regions. Most studies on KIBS refer to core and/or metropolitan regions and little has been said about the characteristics and nature of their development in other regions. Based on the Spanish regional case we try to test several hypotheses about the growth of KIBS in peripheral regions. The results corroborate in a good extent such hypotheses and they pointing out two main trends: a) there is a high concentration of these services supply in most developed regions and particularly in the Madrid region which, on top of that, counts with a export oriented KIBS sector; b) despite KIBS growth during the last decade, a clear external dependency is observed in this sector for less developed regions.
