Resumo

The paper attempts to explore the function of negation in childrens natural language, and critisize the pragmatic approach with reference to Antinucci-Volterras work. The spontaneus language of thirty children aged 1;3-3;0 years was recorded during four thiry minutes sessions. Negative utterances were analysed and classified into five groups according to the particular situations and presupposition of the speaker and the particular effects on the listener. We conclude that child negations have a multifunctional value: children use them for controlling an action, correcting information and showing emotions. This is gradually acquired through contact with the verbal community to which they belong
