Abstract

The objective of the study is to measure the level of concern of Galician citizens regarding the welfare of farm animals through four variables: possession of domestic animals, age, gender and educational level. In order to do so, a questionnaire was designed and a total of 372 surveys were completed. After an analysis of the results using SPSS, it is revealed that 85% of the population shows interest in the establishment of measures that promote animal welfare. The data indicates that women present higher levels of concern for animal welfare, as well as those individuals who own pets. On the other hand, the age variable does not contribute significant differences. Regarding the educational level, the results reveal that those with a higher academic level have less interest in animal welfare than subjects with primary, secondary, high school or vocational training. We conclude that there is a citizen demand for the European institutions to get legislatively involved in these issues.
