Abstract

The aim of this article is to study the Pan-Americanism in the USA. From the analysis of a rich documentary corpus - government, parliamentary, diplomatic, and journalistic sources - I focus on the beginnings of the Pan-American movement in the 1880s. I place Pan-Americanism in its context, that of imperialism and the Great Depression (1873 1896), and I analyze it as an imperialist policy to resolve the capitalist accumulation crisis. At the same time, I analyze the incidences that Pan-Americanism, as a hegemonic project, had within US politics, the debates it provoked and the modifications it generated. Keywords: imperialism, USA, Pan-Americanism, Foreign policy.
