Abstract
This paper analyses the path taken by the EU and Spain to promote gender balance in listed companies over the last few years, since it is assumed that gender equality on the boards of directors of listed companies is a strategic objective that cannot be renounced. The research begins with a study of the failed 2012 Proposal for a Directive and its final approval in 2022, when the EU gave a new and decisive boost to this issue in the spheres of power of large companies. However, the Directive, as a minimum unifying standard, adopts a moderate and progressive approach, the development of which is left to the Member States. Our country already has a draft law on the subject which, in its scope of application and in some aspects of content, is more ambitious than the European standard. It is to be hoped that this provisional text will see the light of day and, with its application, will help to achieve real and effective equality in all social spheres.
