Resumo

Currently, liquid biopsies have emerged as a potential tool for the management of oral cancer. Their application has proven to be crucial in the development of precision oncology due to their ability to provide molecular information in a minimally invasive manner, in contrast with solid tumor biopsies. Additionally, they offer a comprehensive view of the tumor heterogeneity that occurs in oral carcinogenesis, both at the time of diagnosis and during the disease, which has a significant impact on treatment response and disease progression. Circulating free DNA, circulating tumor cells, microRNAs, and exosomes are the most studied tumor biomarkers in blood liquid biopsies. Although there is a need to increase the number of studies and the sensitivity of molecular analysis tools, the emergence of artificial intelligence and the development of increasingly precise technologies will allow for the clinical implementation of liquid biopsies in the management of oral cancer in the coming years, revolutionizing the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of this condition.
