Resumo

The article explores what appears to be a literary controversy taking place in Liber sancti Iacobi (LSI) and De rebus Britonum (DRB). In the LSI, the Poitevin Aimeric Picaud combines an exaggerated display of admiration for his countrymen with derogatory comments for other peoples, including the Cornish, to whom he alludes with an insulting adjective (caudatus). For his part, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s DGB stages Corineus, the eponymous hero of Cornwall whose noble and invincible figure seems created to answer the semantics of caudatus. Moreover, the greatest exploits of Corineus take place precisely against people from Poitou whom he defeats repeatedly and humiliatingly. All this allows us to deduce that the controversy between the two authors could be the reflection of a real clash between the armies of Poitou and Cornwall that took place at the end of 1136 in Normandy. This was one of the first acts of the dynastic conflict caused by the death of Henry I of England, which involved a good part of the British and French lordships of this time.
