Resumo

Literature has systematically estab-lished that forgiveness has therapeutic effects. As for this, measures of forgiveness are a scientific and practice need. A study was designed to validate in Spanish setting the gold standard for the measure of forgiveness, the Enright Forgiveness Inventory-30 (EFI-30). Method: The EFI-30 was translated to Spanish from the original English ver-sion (back translation). The EFI-30, a measure of for-giveness and a measure of social desirability were admin-istered to a Spanish sample of 623 participants (66.8% fe-male, 32.4% male, 0.8% did not report) with a mean age of 29 years (SD=14.65). Results: A confirmatory facto-rial analysis showed the best fit indexes (construct valid-ity) for the seminal 6-factor structure (positive affect, neg-ative affect, positive behavior, negative behavior, positive cognition, negative cognition) of the EFI-30 (factorial in-variance), a positive correlation with the measure of for-giveness (convergent validity), and a non-significant cor-relation with social desirability (discriminant validity). Likewise, through the mean variance extracted, conver-gent validity was also found for the factors and discrimi-nant validity between the factors. The reliability of the composite was α=.96. Conclusions: The results of the validation of the EFI-30 in Spanish are discussed, as well as the validity of its use in scientific studies (α> .80) and in applied settings (e.g., clinician) involving important de-cision making (α> .95).
