Abstract
This paper seeks to reflect on the modelling of women by Franco’s regime, based on discourse, politics and the legal system, through ideological apparatuses –such as the school or the mass media– and concrete ideological agents –Catholic Church and Sección Femenina de FET-JONS–; that is to say, to investigate in the defining strategies of the gender and womanhood for and during the Franco dictatorship. Moreover, it is intended to draw an evolutionary line around this issue throughout the Franco dictatorship. One of the starting hypothesis is that the metamorphosis and adaptability of the regime had effects that were evidenced in the socio-cultural patterns of gender and in the model of femininity. From the 1950s onwards, and more clearly in the 1960s, a turning point is observed, linked to the political, economic and sociocultural adjustments, among others, that the Franco’s dictatorship tried to implement in the interests of its survival and durability.
