Abstract

This paper discusses the concept of “algorithm” from an anthropological perspective, considering the centrality of the notion of agency and technology developed in Science and Technology Studies. First, we review the main areas that have studied digital ecologies and the place of algorithms in them. Next, we define “algorithmic systems” as open socio-technical assemblages that enacts in the networks of relations from which they emerge. Thirdly, we outline some methodological approaches from which to address the “opacity” with which algorithmic systems are often described. Finally, we present the texts in this monograph, considering the “opacity-transparency” duo as its unifying thread.
