Abstract

Justification: proper root canal treatment depends directly on knowledge of the anatomy of the root canal system of each tooth. In mandibular incisors, clinicians often take for granted that they are presented in a single root canal configuration when performing a root canal treatment, overlooking a second, more lingualized canal, which leads to endodontic failure. The aim of this in vitro study was to find the prevalence of the lingual canal in lower incisors. Secondarily, it was also studied the type of Vertucci variation presented in each case. Materials and methods: to carry out this study, a sample of 77 mandibular central and lateral incisors extracted from a population in northern Spain have been selected. Different projections of radiographic images were obtained to analyze anatomic variants and number of canals. Results: the second canal configuration was found in the 39% of the sample. The most common Vertucci type was the I, followed by the III and II. Conclusion: although the most common is usually the presence of a single root canal, there is a considerable percentage with two canals and their identification is fundamental for the success of the treatment. Moreover, it is necessary to consider other anatomic configurations inside the canal.
