Abstract

In January 1959, the dam of Vega de Tera (Zamora), built by the company Moncabril, burst. is was one of the greatest Spanish tragedies, not only because of the number of deaths but also because of the material losses caused in Ribadelago, where, as a consequence of the ood, practically the whole population disappeared. Given the magnitude of the catastrophe, there was an important movement of solidarity at national and international level, and the official relief response led Franco to adopt the Zamoran population, thus generating a new population that today becomes a testimony of the catastrophe and a heritage that can only be understood in relation to it.
