Abstract

A study was designed to contrast if the self-concept competence level differs along the criminal career of juveniles (primary vs. recidivist). The self-concept of 283 juveniles, who were serving a judicial sentence, 145 recidivists and 138 primaries, was measured by the Cuestionario de Autoconcepto AFA-A (Musitu, García, & Gutiérrez, 1997) and criminal career was measured by the judicial report and sentence. Results revealed differences in self-concept mediated by criminal career factor (primary vs. recidivist). Succinctly, the primary offenders have poorer family and academic self-concept than recidivist. In consequence, prevention and treatment programs for primary juvenile offenders, into the contents, should take account of the empowermen in family and scholar self-concept.
