Resumo

The objectives of this work are projected to clarify the concept of complementary activities and their consideration in educational legislation. It is also intended to highlight the existence of a wide variety of possible activities and their main educational values, as well as the possibilities and limitations to carry them out. A methodology based on documentary analysis has been used with special incidence in specialized bibliography and in the educational laws of the last decades, as well as in the decrees of organization of infant, primary and secondary education centers. Important educational values linked to the motivation of learning, interdisciplinarity, socialization and the stimulus to the development of a more dynamic, innovative and creative teaching have been identified in the complementary activities. The complementary activities imply an increase in the teacher’s effort as well as in their responsibilities. From an organizational perspective, its implementation faces difficulties such as the inertia of certain forms of conventional work or the lack of resources that jeopardize equal rights among students.
