Abstract

This study uses the methodology of Material Flow Analysis to analyse the impact of renewable energies on material consumption in the European Union 15 countries. The aim is to check whether dematerialisation and the reduction in the consumption of fossil energy resources can be linked to the development of renewable energies or, on the contrary, are due to the relocation of the most fossil-intensive industries. The results show that the consumption of energy from renewable sources is not yet sufficient to have a significant impact on material consumption. Although there has been some level of dematerialisation since 2008, the main cause is to be found in the effects of the 2008 Crisis. Production relocations have allowed material consumption to soften in recent decades and their influence on material consumption is reinforced after the crisis.
