Abstract

With the aim of knowing the effects of the gender and the parental separation inthe perspective taking; fantasy; emphatic concern; personal distress dimensions otempathy a tìeld study was designed, As for this, 160 students of compulsory secondaryeducation, 87 females and 73 males, 80 of broken families and 80 of intact families, with a mean age of 14.32 years (SD = 1.25) were assessed in the perspective taking;fantasy; emphatic concern; personal distress dimensions of empathy. The resultsshowed a significant multivariate effect for the gender and family (intact vs. brokenfamily) factors, but not for the interaction of booth factors, At a univariate level, theresults exhibited a higher empathic concern, fantasy and perspective taking amongfemales. Additionally, the results advertised that the children of broken familiesreported lower levels of perspective taking and higher levels of personal distress thanthe children of intact families, The implications of the results for the intervention withchildren of broken families are discussed.
