Abstract

Agroforestry systems can increase resource efficiency, enhance productivity, and improve the overall resilience of agro-ecosystems. The potential of, agroforestry to contribute to sustainable rural development has been recognised in research and political circles, but still there are several obstacles for the implementation of these systems. National innovation networks have an important role,in promoting land use best practices. In recent years, eastern European countries have gained the possibility to contribute to the research and development, activities of the European agroforestry community. As a result, the first national agroforestry innovation networks have been established in the region. The paper introduces good examples of such initiatives in Eastern Europe.
