Resumo

The current research aims to know the leadership exerted by the Teachers Training Schools’ Managers in Angola; understand the existing types of leadership; and identify the characteristics that the democratic leaders of Teachers Training Schools present; produce and induce knowledge for the democratic leadership training of the Teachers Training Schools’ Managers in Angola. This research is mainly based on the qualitative approach, phenomenological method; it was accomplished at 10 Teachers Training Schools from both the Center and South Angola. The sample was constituted by 210 participants, being 10 School Directors, 200 Teachers at the first stage; and 93 participants at the second stage, among them, 3 School Directors and 90 Teachers. A semi structured interview and a questionnaire were the used tools in order to collect the data at the first stage; and an indepth interview and a questionnaire about democratic leadership at the second stage. The results of the interviews and the questionnaires allowed the participants to reflect on the categories; democratic leadership; the School Directors’ academic and professional training; the School Directors’ in-service time; length of time in position; the leadership practised by the school Directors; participating management; and the relationship among students, teachers and the community. The results show that the democratic leadership still is scarce. The democratic leadership represents less than a third of the grand total. That means that we still are far away from what would be desirable. The existence of these three types of leadership is associated to the historical, social and political contexts of the country. Meanwhile, at the centers characterized by democratic leadership, we can find elements to stimulate its development in the rest of the country.
