Resumen
Care of an elder relative with dependence can produce an important psychological impact on caregiver’s life. The aim of this study is to examine caregiver burden and caregiver distress and to estimate the relationship between both variables among Galician informal caregivers of dementia patients. Caregivers were assessed using the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) and the Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90-R). The results showed that 30% of caregivers achieved a total score equal or above 46 (cut-off point) on CBI. All symptomatic dimensions on SCL-90-R were above the average of the normative group, and global severity index achieved 85 centil. Furthermore, we found a significative positive correlation between CBI and SCL-90-R scores (r = 0.67; p < 0.05). Future research needs to develop prevention and intervention programmes in order to reduce distress of informal caregivers with severe burden.
