Abstract
Depression is one of the commonest psychological disorders among adolescents and adults. In Spain it affects more than 3 million patients. There have been significant advances in its diagnosis and treatment, but a problem of this magnitude requires preventive measures. In this communication we review the reasons for prevention and the various approaches that are possible, survey randomized clinical trials of measures aimed at preventing initial onset, analyse the variables governing the efficiency of these trials, and make recommendations for how future research in this field should be carried out.
