Resumo
Pericardial effusion refers to the accumulation of liquid or fluid in the pericardial sac or space. The pericardium is the membrane which surrounds the heart. It has two layers: an internal “visceral” layer and another external, fibrous “parietal” layer. In normal conditions, it can contain from 10 to 50 ml of pericardial fluid. Cardiac tamponade is a clinical syndrome in which pericardial effusion under pressure compresses the heart and interferes with diastolic filling of the heart's chambers. In cases of sudden, rapid accumulation of fluid in the pericardial sac, small quantities of pericardial effusion can cause hemodynamic compromise. In developed countries, the majority of pericardial effusion cases have an idiopathic etiology, whereas other common causes may include cancer, infections, iatrogenic causes, and connective tissue diseases.
