Abstract

Isoba (43º 02’ N, 5º 18’ W, 1400 m a.m.s.l.) is a glaciokarstic lake with 5.5 m water depth, located in the western Cantabrian Range. The present study focuses on a 66.5 cm long core recovered from the deepest area of the lake, and dated by 210 Pb and 137 Cs. The multidisciplinary approach (sedimentology, geochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, pollen and diatoms) allows reconstructing the main environmental changes occurred during the last centuries, as a result of the interplay of anthropic impact and recent climatic variability. Results indicate an increase in sedimentation rate and heavy metal concentration (Pb, Zn, Cu) since the second half of the 20th century, coincident with the so called ‘Great Acceleration’. The aforementio- ned increasing tendency is coherent with Cantabrian coastal records. Our study on diatom microflora, and its variations in abundance and diversity, aims to reconstruct precisely the main local and regional environmental changes recorded in this particular mountain area during the Anthropocene.
