Abstract

A new species of the genus Athripsodes Billberg, 1820, A. curvispinus sp. n., is described from southwest Europe (Spain, Portugal, France and southwest Germany). Its affinities with other species of the genus are discussed, and it is concluded that the new species is related to A. albifrons, A. morettii and A. bilineatus. The most unique feature of the new species is the possession of two pairs of sturdy, strongly recurved phallic spines, a character that, together with some details of its gonopods, allows it to be clearly differentiated from other species.
