Abstract

In this paper we present, within the framework of our current research project, CON-STRIDIOMS, a proposal for the description of German phraseological constructions which includes the contrastive aspect with Spanish. In contrast to substantive phraseo-logical constructions, i.e., those with lexically saturated constituents (e.g., sich (um etw.) den Kopf zerbrechen), phraseological constructions are characterised by open constituents or slots which are actualised in discourse. In terms of meaning, a strong pragmatic content is often observed. We will dwell in more detail on the cross-linguistic level, where the search for func-tional equivalents is carried out by means of parallel corpora, namely PaGeS, using the unilateral contrastive method (Kątny/Olszewska/Socka 2014). This process of searching for and systematising functional equivalents will, in turn, constitute the starting point for the detection of (new) constructional idioms in the target language. As a case study we focus on the construction [aus VOLL Nsg{somatonym}], which licenses constructs such as those extracted from the Timestamped JSI web corpus 2014-2020 German (Sketch Engine): aus vollem Herzen, aus voller Kehle, aus voller Brust, aus vollem Hals(e), aus voller Lunge, with varying degrees of lexicalisation. The construction is characterised by a clear intensifying function and can co-occur in its syntagmatic profile with a defined series of verbs, mainly related to the utterance of sounds. By means of the analysis of parallel corpora, we will try to determine which Spanish intensifying constructions reflect the meaning and function of the German construction.
