Abstract

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that, like all, since the French Encyclopédie, is also an ideological battlefield. In this article we try to analyze how a political phenomenon like WikiLeaks is edited and reedited in Wikipedia and viewed by hundreds of thousands of people. We believe that an increase in these editions and views implies an increase in the public interest. In fact, given the decreasing effectiveness of surveys, this may be another parameter of measurement of public interest for a topic. We use the Wikipedia metadata about the editions of their entries and page views statistics to determine the curves of interest and demonstrate that there is a clear relationship between this and the presence of a phenomenon -in this case WikiLeaks- in traditional media. Also, we use these editions in Wikipedia of the term WikiLeaks and the peak web traffic periods to realize a retrospective analysis of this political phenomenon and the hacker culture. We identify the moments in which the number of editors and views increases; that is, how collective intelligence unites to create a collaborative story of what WikiLeaks is and its impact on public opinion.
