Increasing agriculture sustainability in Europedriving factors for agroforestry implementation

Abstract

Agroforestry contributes to challenges such as feeding increasing populations, depletion of natural resources and the impact of climate change. This thesis aims at analysing the drivers of the European farmers and foresters for implementing or not agroforestry in their lands, and how the last Common Agricultural Policy affected the promotion of agroforestry in Europe. The major driving forces are tradition in the family or the region, diversification of products and learning from successful experiences. The promotion of the woody component can be appreciated in different sections of the CAP linked to Pillar I and Pillar II, although lack of consistency between Pillars are one of the main drawbacks to adopt agroforestry. La agrosilvicultura contribuye a afrontar desafíos como la alimentación de la población que está en aumento, el agotamiento de los recursos naturales y el impacto del cambio climático. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo analizar las motivaciones y barreras de los agricultores y silvicultores europeos para implementar o no la agrosilvicultura en sus tierras, y cómo la última Política Agrícola Común afectó a la promoción de la agrosilvicultura en Europa. Las principales motivaciones son la tradición en la familia o la región, la diversificación de productos y el conocimiento de experiencias exitosas. La promoción del componente leñoso se puede apreciar en diferentes apartados de la PAC vinculados al Pilar I y al Pilar II, aunque la falta de coherencia entre Pilares es uno de los principales inconvenientes para adoptar la agroforestería.
