Resumo

Traditionally, timber production has been the main objective of forest management in Galiciabecause of the high productivity of its forests. However, factors such as the risk of fire and theneed to obtain benefits sooner recommend considering new alternatives. Silvopastoral systemsare an example of this. Integration of grazing in the forest in addition to diversify the products andbenefits to be obtained reduces the risk of fire, favoring the fuel control. However, there are fewstudies analyzing the economic viability of these systems. The aim of this paper is the analysisof silvopastoral systems from the economic point of view on abandoned agricultural land plantedwith Pinus radiata D. Don. The technique used is based on the combination of an optimizationalgorithm and a simulator of the growth of trees and grass. The results show that the most profitable schedules are obtained with initial planting densities of 1 500 trees per hectare andtwo thinnings. In all the study cases, the rotations are shorter than in the case of purely timberproduction schedules.
