Abstract

A field trial was carried out in an acid soil, which was limed for cultivation, in Galicia (NW Spain), in order to study the effects of the fertilization with dried pelletized broiler litter, compared with conventional mineral fertilization, on soil acidity and soil nutrient (P, K and Ca) content for three consecutive forage maize-annual Italian ryegrass rotations. The annual application of 11 000 kg ha-1 of broiler litter, or higher doses, had a clear effect in neutralizing soil acidity, which was reflected in the reduction in the percentage of aluminium saturation and in an increase in exchangeable calcium. The dried pelletized broiler litter was competitive with conventional mineral fertilization to supply P and K for both crops.
