Abstract

Migration experiences involve contact between people from differentgeographical origins, leading to new cultural symbolic spaces that are characterizedby being mobile (they vary over time), fluids (they can be manipulated) and flexible (they do not respond to fixed formulas). Traditionally theoretical interpretationsand empirical studies (especially those seeking regular behavior) provide a unifyingvision of them. Given this observation, this chapter focuses on the high internaldiversity that a homogenizing perspective avoids. The first section places specialemphasis in the fact that the characteristics of the migrant experience depends ongender. The second point, that part of a rhetorical question about the number ofcultures that may come into contact, delves into the effects of the development ofinformation and communications technology (ICT). This has not only enhancedtransnational interpersonal communication, but has also led the expansion of thepossibilities of access to a diverse media-cultural offer. Finally, the text addressesthe socio-cultural associations formed by and for the migrant population, giventhe lack of analysis of its role in the dissemination, knowledge and encounter ofdifferent cultures. Overall, this is a theoretical essay settled on empirical observation.
