Abstract

The Mac Arthur Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI), Form II: Words and Sentences is a parent report questionnaire aimed to assess children´ early lexical and morphosyntactic abilities between 16 and 30 months. This article presents the adaptation of the CDI Form II to River Plate Spanish. First, the procedure followed for the CDI adaptation into this South-American Spanish variety is explained. Second, some measures of reliability and validity together with the main developmental trends found after the application of the inventory to 726 parents of children of the above mentioned ages are described. On the one hand, the River Plate Spanish CDI showed excellent levels of internal consistency, while their lexical items have proved to be highly representative of the Argentine toddlers´ first vocabulary. On the other hand, children´ lexical and grammatical abilities significantly increased across age groups, in a similar way to other CDI adaptations. In addition, moderate but significant correlations between vocabulary size and morphosyntactic complexity were found, even after controlling for age. Last, a main effect of maternal education was found both for children´ vocabulary and the mean length of their first utterances. These results suggest that the CDI adaptation to River Plate Spanish represents a relevant, promising contribution for young children´ language assessment in South America.
