Resumen

Aunque el uso de la Red es un fenómeno generalizado y beneficioso a muchos niveles, cada vez son más los trabajos que advierten que un posible uso problemático o no adaptativo puede conllevar importantes consecuencias a nivel psicológico y comportamental. A pesar de la cantidad de literatura existente sobre el tema, los intentos de identificación de variables asociadas y la elaboración de modelos explicativos son relativamente escasos. En este estudio, realizado a partir de una muestra de 1709 estudiantes de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria de la provincia de A Coruña, con edades comprendidas entre los 11 y los 17 años, se ha intentado estudiar la relación entre el uso problemático de Internet y diferentes variables (sociodemográficas, el papel de los padres, el rendimiento académico, hábitos de uso y consecuencias asociadas). Los resultados obtenidos no sólo revelan que el 26,6% de los adolescentes que componen la muestra presentan un uso problemático de Internet, sino también que el hecho de ser mujer o que los padres no sean usuarios de la Red, onstituirían posibles predictores. Se ha constatado también que el uso problemático se asocia a un menor rendimiento académico y a una mayor presencia de problemas físicos y psicosociales, presumiblemente consecuencia de éste.
