Abstract

The aim of this experimental work is to find out and analyse the visual behaviour of lifeguards in natural spaces by viewing two videos of drowning in water using a pupillometer. The importance of this study lies in the fact that drowning is one of the most significant causes of death globally, and one of the most effective preventive measures is the presence of a lifeguard, in order to preserve the safety of users in the aquatic environment. The first phase of intervention by this professional is the detection and perception of the accident, which involves complex cognitive processes that lead to decisionmaking. It is in this phase where we have focused on finding out the influential variables of this process, obtaining significant results. One of these is that those lifeguards who spent more than 20 seconds looking at the area were more likely to detect drowning than their peers.
